Netball in St Lucia
Netball in St Lucia is the number one sport for women, with more than 500 players involved. It is played in the majority of schools, and sees high numbers of participation. It is a sport that gains frequent coverage in the local and national newspapers and is increasing in its popularity.
Funding for The St Lucia National Netball Association comes mostly from affiliation fees with the Government and sponsors contributing towards regional and national tournaments.
However, there is still a lack of support and investment going into the lower levels of the game. Our contribution provides a wider opportunity for more children and young people to take part in netball, helping develop the game for future generations and providing a vital link to the national team.
Your Netball Coaching Volunteer Placement
The majority of the netball coaching you do will be to help run free after school netball coaching programs to disadvantaged young people on the island. There is a lack of grassroots coaching in the Caribbean and as a result a lack of grassroots coaches. You will make it possible for these coaches to work with thousands of children to build the sport from the ground upwards. Your enthusiasm and contribution in supporting these netball coaches will undoubtedly shape the game for the future.
You will also work alongside national programmes and projects aimed at developing the game at a grass roots level, including some of the following areas of netball development:
1. Junior Visionaries after school programme at Castries, Monchy, Micoud, Soufriere and Vieux Fort.
2. Girls2Women’s Empowerment Programme: A female only program for girls aged 8 – 18 based at the Upton Gardens Girls Centre.
3. A Special Needs programme which will look to work with children who have learning difficulties and help remove the stigma surrounding mental illness in the Caribbean.
Your weekly schedule would aim to run along the following format, but is subject to change:
Weekdays – Sessions will take place after school between 2:00pm – 4:30pm (subject to the school).
Saturdays – Sessions will take place in the morning from 10:00am – 12:00pm.
Our netball coaching placement is ideal for anyone looking to pursue a career in sport, teaching or childcare. The placement is suitable for players and coaches of all experience, qualifications and abilities and we will work with you to establish what your most suitable role will be at the time of your visit.
Summer camps in St Lucia run throughout July and August, and are run in conjunction with sports charity Sacred Sports. These camps attract over 300 children across the island and are free for children aged 5 to 18yrs, offering a range of different sports. The aim is to get children off the streets and doing something positive with their long holidays off school. Volunteer sports coaches are required for cricket, football, netball and rugby.
