Ever wondered what volunteering as a football coach in Saint Lucia looks like?

First, let’s understand the programme as a whole. Our Football Coaching Volunteer Programme is all about developing the sport at a grassroots level—bringing football into schools, disadvantaged communities, and local clubs. With football being the most played sport on the island, there’s a huge demand for quality coaching, and that’s where our volunteers step in. From running after-school sessions for young players to working with competitive teams preparing for league matches, volunteers play a vital role in shaping the future of football in Saint Lucia.

Special thanks to Lucas Tusch, United Through Sport Saint Lucia intern, for capturing the intensity and focus of this training session. His detailed write-up showcases the dedication of our young footballers and the impact of structured coaching in developing their skills. Let’s take a closer look!

Football Training Session: Sharpening Shooting and Passing Skills

A well-structured football training session can lead to immediate improvements when players focus on key fundamentals. In our latest session at Travel Daniel’s Football Academy, we emphasized two crucial aspects of the game—shooting and receiving short to mid-range passes—through high-intensity drills and game-based exercises. By the end, the players showed remarkable progress in both accuracy and decision-making.

We started with a dynamic warm-up, incorporating quick footwork drills and light passing exercises to get players comfortable on the ball. The focus then shifted to passing drills, where players practiced receiving and distributing the ball with precision. Emphasis was placed on controlling the first touch and making quick decisions under pressure.

The shooting segment followed, designed to improve both power and placement. Players worked on striking the ball cleanly from various distances, aiming for the corners to maximize their chances of scoring. A key drill required them to receive a pass, take a controlled touch, and finish in one or two moves—simulating real-game scenarios. Goalkeepers were kept busy as they faced a high volume of shots from different angles.

To reinforce these skills, we introduced small-sided games that encouraged fast ball movement and clinical finishing. One game, a 3v3 match, limited touches before shooting, forcing players to think quickly and be decisive in front of goal. The immediate results were evident—passing sequences became smoother, finishing more precise, and players displayed greater composure under pressure.

By the end of the session, the improvements were clear. Players not only sharpened their technical abilities but also developed a deeper understanding of space and timing. This session at Travel Daniel’s Football Academy proved that with focused training, small adjustments can lead to significant enhancements in performance—ensuring these skills translate seamlessly into competitive matches.
