Rebecca – Incredible Bucket List Travel
Volunteering abroad had always been on Rebecca’s bucket list. Travelling beyond Europe was something she’d dreamed of for years, and South Africa felt like the perfect place to finally make it happen. She set off on a journey that would challenge, inspire, and ultimately transform her.
A Warm Welcome to South Africa
“I spent 5 nights in Cape Town. Upon arrival of Port Elizabeth, I felt very safe and the neighbourhood we stayed in had a great vibe, with lots of local amenities. The hostel felt like a home away from home and the staff were so welcoming.”
When joining United Through Sport, the programme environment is everything a first-time solo traveller could hope for, from airport pickup, through every day of the trip, and even beyond when we meet again at our annual reunion each year in London. Our volunteers are supported by local and international staff every step of the way.
Coaching Dance and Hockey
During her placements, Rebecca had the opportunity to coach both dance and hockey, two areas that encouraged creativity, teamwork, and confidence among the children.
“We played a series of warm up games and ended our session with a match or performance. The children were eager and enthusiastic to learn and particularly showed enjoyment having the freedom to dance (and teach us some moves too!).”
Bucket List Moments
While volunteering was Rebecca’s top bucket list moment, these trips are designed to balance meaningful work through our volunteer-led programmes in local communities and unforgettable social and travel moments during the evenings and weekends.
“The group trip had fantastic opportunities to socialise and all activities were well considered to meet the interests of the group. I really appreciated the fact that multiple activities were available to suit your social battery and interests. It was great to have team leaders attend all social activities, they were a truly incredible team!”
Among the many memorable moments, two stand out:
Jeffreys Bay
Jeffreys Bay quickly became a favourite spot, a rewarding celebration after the first week of volunteering. The group soaked up the sun and embraced local activities like surfing and sandboarding. Even those who were complete beginners gave it their best go.
A Wholesome Bush Camp Experience
“The bush camp was also a huge highlight and such a wholesome evening, a chance to soak up the culture and sit back to appreciate our trip.”
Personal Growth and Lifelong Friendships
Travelling solo outside Europe for the first time felt like a big step, but one Rebecca navigated with growing confidence.
“Travelling beyond Europe solo was something I’ve always wanted to do and this experience allowed me to do this in a safe and organised way. I have made some incredible friendships and have already got dates in the diary to meet up! It’s hard to put into words what a volunteering experience such as this changes you. I am forever grateful for this experience and to support such happy and uplifting children was the icing on the cake!”
Rebecca’s Advice for Future Volunteers
Her message to anyone considering the trip is simple:
“My advice to those considering this trip … book it whilst you can! The trips can sell out so quickly and there’s good reason for that. You will have the BEST time, make so many new friends and be forever bonded by this fantastic experience.”
Rebecca’s story is a reminder of the impact that happens when you step outside your comfort zone.
