Annabelle Satow on her South African Hockey Experience
United Through Sport gave me so much more than just a volunteer experience; it gave me a new perspective on life. It pushed me out of my comfort zone and opened my eyes to the power of community and connection.
During my three months with United Through Sport in South Africa at the start of my gap year in 2024, I had the time of my life. Coaching local kids hockey was so rewarding; their energy and enthusiasm for the game were infectious. Every day at the schools was a reminder of the universal language of sport and its ability to bring people together.
But it wasn’t just about the hockey. What really made the experience unforgettable were the people. I met incredible volunteers from all over the world. Together, we explored Cape Town, tackled new challenges, and formed friendships that I know will last a lifetime. Whether we were bonding over our shared love for sport or discovering the beauty of South Africa through weekend excursions, every moment was made richer by the people I shared the experience with.
To anyone thinking about volunteering with United Through Sport, I can’t recommend it enough. It’s not just about giving back; it’s about growing, learning, and making memories that will stay with you long after you’ve returned home.
