Jasmine – An Inspiring Volunteering Trip to South Africa
Volunteering in Africa
I had always wanted to volunteer in Africa, and United Through Sport stood out to me as they are not only focused on teaching and working with the kids in a classroom setting but the importance of physical activity and education in schools, with the lack of this in the curriculum.
We completed 3 sessions a day across a variety of schools along with a Learn to Move session in the morning targeted at younger students to work on basic skills. I did a combination of tennis and dance coaching, and it was so nice to see the progression of the children across the sessions and how eager they are for feedback and tips on how to get better.
Starting the trip, I did not expect to make such strong friendships with the other volunteers. Meeting like-minded people and spending so much time with them in the schools and on social outings created amazing relationships in such a short time. The bond made with the teachers and students was a highlight of my trip. They are so welcoming and excited to have you there helping in the classroom and by the end of the trip they felt like family.
My trip has made me so grateful for the opportunities I have had in my life, this trip included. The trip changed my perspective on sport in that it isn’t always a competitive game or something you have to be amazing at, it can just be a great way to have a smile with friends or clear your head. The children were so inspiring, willing to give any sport a go and put in the work to learn and improve.
The children and communities we visited radiated with so much happiness and love, and this is what I will miss most about South Africa.
My advice for anyone thinking about volunteering with United Through Sport is to just do it. The only thing I regret is not going sooner and not staying longer.
Volunteer Programmes and Internships with United Through Sport South Africa are more than just a placement, they are truly an unforgettable travel experience. For further insight into trips like Jasmine’s, read past volunteer Denise’s Travel Magazine.
