Lydia Burge – Coaching and Teaching in Saint Lucia

My name is Lydia, I’m 18 years old and I signed up to take part in a 6 week sports placement centered around netball coaching and teaching in St Lucia.

I decided to volunteer for UTS this summer as I really warmed to the aspect of sharing my knowledge of netball with others who are keen to learn; and on the other hand I was able to learn about their culture, which was completely new for me. I had also never taken part in any other work similar to this, so, considering I had just finished my A-Levels – I thought now was the perfect time!

My coaching routine consisted of both morning and evening sessions throughout the week at a local netball complex. This is where myself, and other volunteers, taught enthusiastic players, varying in age and ability. Through the early stages of my coaching in St Lucia I noticed the difference of play and the knowledge of the rules, in comparison to how netball is in England. As well as this, the different structure – England has pathways and many opportunities whereas in St Lucia, there is less of this. As my time went on in St Lucia, seeing the girls improve their play and overall knowledge of the sport turned out to be very rewarding – which was one of the biggest highlights of my placement.

As well as all the coaching having a very positive impact on my stay in St Lucia, so did meeting and living with the other volunteers. I created great friendships with everyone, making my stay even more enjoyable. Because of the great friendships I made, it meant I was lucky enough to go on many excursions with them; this included: climbing the Pitons, going to the Sulphur Springs, zip lining through the rainforest and visiting Marigot Bay. I thoroughly enjoyed and recommend them all.

Overall, I would recommend this placement to anyone who is willing to do something different and make changes to people’s lives who are less fortunate than us. On top of this, I would definitely consider doing another placement in the future.
