Linde Bosman – Netball Coaching Internship in South Africa
Hi, I’m Linde, and I can confidently say that completing my internship with United Through Sport in South Africa was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. From the moment I arrived to the final day of the program, the experience transformed my understanding of sport, community, and personal growth in ways I never imagined possible.
Coaching children in townships was an eye-opening experience that taught me gratitude and the value of teamwork. I realised how fortunate I am and felt immense satisfaction in making a positive impact on the children’s lives. Seeing their smiles and knowing we were contributing to their happiness was incredibly fulfilling. Coaching them wasn’t just about teaching sports, it was about encouraging teamwork, building confidence, and creating a space where they could simply be kids.
The whole volunteer experience was filled with highlights. Living in a shared accommodation with other volunteers was one of many. The UTS base was super comfortable, safe, and a lively hub of different cultures and personalities. I met amazing people from around the world. We bonded over daily routines, shared meals, late-night chats, and weekend adventures. Those friendships became one of the most valuable parts of the trip. I met people I might never have crossed paths with otherwise, and now I can’t imagine my life without them.
The weekends were packed with excursions that helped us bond even more. A few of the activities were bungee jumping, shark cage diving, and sandboarding, all of which pushed me to face my fears and with every challenge I overcame, my confidence grew. One of the most unforgettable excursions was the big 5, overnight safari. Witnessing South Africa’s wildlife up close was a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
The freedom to choose my internship tasks was another positive aspect. I wasn’t just following a set schedule—I was encouraged to take initiative. My supervisor was supportive and open-minded, allowing me to focus on areas I was passionate about. This autonomy made the internship even more enjoyable and tailored to my interests.
The support from the United Through Sport team was excellent. They were always there to assist and guide us, provide feedback and ensure we had a fulfilling experience both personally and for the projects we worked on. I would definitely recommend this programme to anyone looking to make a difference while having an adventure of a lifetime. The experience has left me with a deep appreciation for what I have and a desire to continue helping others.
South Africa now holds a special place in my heart, thanks to the incredible journey with United Through Sport.
