Tennis CoachingSt Lucia SeaTennis Project in St Lucia

Work with a range of kids from 6 to 11 years old bringing fun but structured coaching sessions to kids from around the island whilst also being able to play against locals too.

Tennis in St Lucia
Tennis on the island has historically been a game played in hotels and private estates by wealthy holidaymakers and expatriates, with opportunities for local players hard to come by. This has changed somewhat with the establishment of the state-of-the-art National Tennis Centre in 2011, boasting six international standard hard courts including one signature tournament-style stadium center court, open to the public. Sparking the emergence of many new talented local players on the island and the formation of Youth and Senior tournaments.

The Tennis Association intends to capitalise on recent developments in accessibility and interest around the game; adding a strict
mandate to bring the sport of tennis to all communities on the island of St. Lucia, through Grassroot programmes within schools and
communities.

Your Tennis Coaching Placement
The tennis placement is based around introductory and beginners sessions within schools across the island. The Majority of your placement will be sessions within schools and the National Tennis Centre introducing mini tennis to children aged 6 to 11 years old. The emphasis in these sessions is on fun and participation, with a goal to pass on basic skills and create excitement around the sport. The schools we work in are often some of the island's most impoverished, which means facilities and apparatus will often not be ideal, hence as a coach you will have to be adaptable. United Through Sport will provide coaches with equipment to carry out effective sessions and leave equipment with schools for continued participation where possible.

The Junior Tennis Initiative is a programme ran at the National Tennis Center focused on developing some of the island’s most gifted youth players. Normally evening sessions, you will assist the association coaches to try and coach these aspiring stars up to national level and prepare them for any local tournaments they are competing in. It is also a great opportunity to meet some of the island's local coaches and senior players, where you may even get the chance to play.

Playing level of the groups you may coach are:
School visits: beginners/participation
Tennis Centre school Sessions: participation level aged 6-11
The Junior Tennis Initiative: intermediate and competition level

You will have approx 3hrs coaching per day with additional time being used to play tennis yourself and use the facilities at the tennis centre. We are also keen for you to be involved at a competitive level so matches can be arranged whilst you are with us. The main locations around the island where you will be running your sessions will be at the St Lucia National Tennis Centre, ‘The Gardens’ tennis court (Castries), with school work being based at Babonneau Secondary, Ciceron Secondary and Ave Maria Primary. You'll also take some of the sessions to various schools in the South of the island depending on the timetable for your stay with us.

Your Tennis Coaching Role
Your main aim is to assist us in running fun tennis lessons for kids at different levels of their tennis development. It is important that you can communicate well, taking the knowledge you have for the game and being able to share this with others. Come out with some training drills and fresh ideas in order to help group participation. You'll be supported by and shadowed by our local coaches as they acquire new methods and techniques to continue our work throughout the year after you've finished your placement with us. Tennis coaches are able to use the tennis centre court and facilities at their leisure during their stay and matches can be arranged for volunteers wishing to compete.

Staff
Our tour coordinator stays on site, and hence provides 24/7 assistance and guidance during your stay. He is supported by local staff who have come right through the United through sport model, and are now developing their coaching skills while maintaining our projects on the island all year round. All of whom have extensive local knowledge and coaching experience, and are on hand to help plan and coordinate sessions and to show volunteers the very best spots on the island.

Free Time
Volunteers are able to choose how they spend any time outside of coaching hours, in the evenings and at the weekends. Situated on the beach and perfectly between the main tourist resort and the Capital's city centre, fun and adventure is always just minutes away: On our doorstep are the beautiful Eastwinds and Windjammer resorts, distinguished as two of the islands best relaxation spots for escaping the hustle and bustle of St. Lucia's urban areas. Rodney bay is a 10 minute bus ride (approx 40p) from our accommodation and hosts a much busier beach with a range of water sports on offer, duty free shopping with bars and restaurants contributing to a very vibrant nightlife. For those wishing to explore the island further; buses can be taken from Castries city centre to all areas of the island and our on-island staff are always on hand to suggest the best attractions and excursions, plan your journey and get the best available deals and discount where required.

Excursions
Excursions are not included. However, due to United Through Sport's continued work and presence on the island, our volunteers are afforded discounts and 'local' prices at almost all the islands attractions. Our on-island staff are always happy to help plan and advise on excursions across the island.

Fundraise for your trip
We encourage all of our volunteers to fundraise in order to make up the trip project price, making it much easier for you to manage financially and most importantly to help spread the word about the amazing work you are doing! We will be here every step of the way to give you tips and advice on fundraising ideas and provide you with any marketing material you need, and you'll be surprised how quickly you can raise the money with the help of your family and friends. By setting up a fundraising page through 'Total Giving' the charity can also claim an additional 25% on donations made if the Gift Aid box is ticked. This means 25% more funds to help support our worthwhile projects overseas!

Please note this additional 25% Gift Aid will be treated as a donation to United Through Sport and will not count towards your project price.

CRB/DBS (Criminal Records Bureau) Check
To take part in this project we advise that participants complete a CRB/ DBS check. United Through Sport has a partnership with a third party organisation that processes all CRB/DBS checks and disclosures on behalf of the United Through Sport team. This is a very straightforward process making the application as quick an easy for the volunteer as possible. United Through Sport can provide this service for you at an additional cost of £30. For more information on the application process please take a look at the relevant Add On tab.

St Lucia Map

St Lucia is a small island stretching 27 miles long (north to south) by 14 miles wide (east to west) but you will be overwhelmed by its rolling hills that grow to form volcanic mountains and reach to the sky. The iconic Pitons rise from the waves to the clouds like pyramids of volcanic stone. This isn’t some glammed-up, theme-park holiday spot – St Lucia has a pulse. Your senses are bombarded with the sights, smells and sounds of an island that’s truly alive.

Towns, like the capital Castries, move and shake to the sound of car horns, the smell of rotis fresh from the oven and reggae blaring on the speaker. The people are warm and welcoming and if you want a destination that will let you get under the skin of West Indian life – St Lucia is the one.
