Football Coaching SessionCoaching in ParadiseFootball Project in St Lucia

Join the our Football project in St Lucia and help to develop Football from a grassroots level, promoting Football across the Island in some of the poorest and most deprived areas, as well as working closely with some of the Island's top football clubs and getting the chance to improve your own game. If you're looking for a challenge coaching the beautiful game on this Caribbean Island, this project could be the one for you!

Did you know that you can fundraise for your trip project price? For more information check out the Extra Info tab.

Football in St Lucia
Football is by far the most popular sport in the region with the highest participation levels, which makes it the perfect vehicle to tackle key social issues effecting the region's youth. Under the guidance of our tour coordinator and coaches, volunteer coaches will work with inner-city city children within our partnered schools, free summer camps and our established community groups around the Castries area. Sessions concentrate mainly on skill and tactical development with an overall emphasis on fun, continued participation and social development.

Also, in recent years the St Lucia team has been gaining recognition internationally. Both the Men's and Women's teams have made a been in the qualifying rounds for the World Cup, an impressive feat for a country with a population of just 182,000.

Your Coaching Football Placement
As a football coach you will be working with local coaches and other volunteers to deliver coaching sessions in the disadvantaged communities on the island.

There are also lots of football teams competing across the Island. You will have the chance to work and train for these teams to help develop their skills for their regular matches. You might even have the chance to play for your team.

Saturday sessions take place with the islands top youth academy, which has groups ranging from age 8 to a senior level so the volunteer coaches an select the level they will work with according to experience, knowledge and ability. It is also a great opportunity for volunteers to get some playing time in competitive matches.

Another side to our work is the training of local coaches, we have recently supported the formation of three new youth groups across the island, you will aid the development of their current coaches while working within these groups. We also currently work with local children in the region, offering them fun coaching sessions and distributing any equipment that has been generously donated.

Your Football Coaching role
As football is a relatively well established sport on St Lucia many of the kids you work with will have a good natural talent for the game, however their understanding of the rules, tactics and strategies are likely to be undeveloped.

Your role in the school and community coaching clinics will be to introduce new elements of the game whilst developing the young players’ skills through the application of drills, exercises and conditioned games.

When working with local football clubs, the players will have a much better understanding of rules, tactics and strategy, so your focus will be on building up team play, match-play situations such as set pieces and working on skills and fitness in preparation for competitive matches.

CRB/DBS (Criminal Records Bureau) Check
To take part in this project we advise participants to complete a CRB/ DBS (Criminal Records Bureau). United Through Sport can provide this service for you at an additional cost of £30. For more information on the application process please take a look at the relevant Add On Tab.

The accommodation is in a gated compound, within a safe and friendly neighborhood. Staff are on site 24 hours with a Security Guard on the gate at night. Bedrooms are lockable ensuring safe storing of valuables. United Through Sport also has a link with a local taxi company to aid volunteers in travelling around safely in their free time.

Our tour coordinator stays on site, and hence provides 24/7 assistance and guidance during your stay. He is supported by local staff who have come right through the United through sport model, and are now developing their coaching skills while maintaining our projects on the island all year round. All of whom have extensive local knowledge and coaching experience, and are on hand to help plan and coordinate sessions and to show volunteers the very best spots on the island.

Free Time
Volunteers are able to choose how they spend any time outside of coaching hours, in the evenings and at the weekends. Situated on the beach and perfectly between the main tourist resort and the Capital's city centre, fun and adventure is always just minutes away: On our doorstep are the beautiful Eastwinds and Windjammer resorts, distinguished as two of the islands best relaxation spots for escaping the hustle and bustle of St. Lucia's urban areas. Rodney bay is a 10 minute bus ride (approx 40p) from our accommodation and hosts a much busier beach with a range of water sports on offer, duty free shopping with bars and restaurants contributing to a very vibrant nightlife. For those wishing to explore the island further; buses can be taken from Castries city centre to all areas of the island and our on-island staff are always on hand to suggest the best attractions and excursions, plan your journey and get the best available deals and discount where required.

Excursions are not included. However, due to United Through Sport's continued work and presence on the island, our volunteers are afforded discounts and 'local' prices at almost all the islands attractions. Our on-island staff are always happy to help plan and advise on excursions across the island.

Fundraise for your trip
We encourage all of our volunteers to fundraise in order to make up the trip project price, making it much easier for you to manage financially and most importantly to help spread the word about the amazing work you are doing! We will be here every step of the way to give you tips and advice on fundraising ideas and provide you with any marketing material you need, and you'll be surprised how quickly you can raise the money with the help of your family and friends. By setting up a fundraising page through 'Total Giving' the charity can also claim an additional 25% on donations made if the Gift Aid box is ticked. This means 25% more funds to help support our worthwhile projects overseas!

Please note this additional 25% Gift Aid will be treated as a donation to United Through Sport and will not count towards your project price.

CRB/DBS (Criminal Records Bureau) Check
To take part in this project we advise that participants complete a CRB/ DBS check. United Through Sport has a partnership with a third party organisation that processes all CRB/DBS checks and disclosures on behalf of the United Through Sport team. This is a very straightforward process making the application as quick an easy for the volunteer as possible. United Through Sport can provide this service for you at an additional cost of £30. For more information on the application process please take a look at the relevant Add On tab.

St Lucia Map

St Lucia is a small island stretching 27 miles long (north to south) by 14 miles wide (east to west) but you will be overwhelmed by its rolling hills that grow to form volcanic mountains and reach to the sky. The iconic Pitons rise from the waves to the clouds like pyramids of volcanic stone. This isn’t some glammed-up, theme-park holiday spot – St Lucia has a pulse. Your senses are bombarded with the sights, smells and sounds of an island that’s truly alive.

Towns, like the capital Castries, move and shake to the sound of car horns, the smell of rotis fresh from the oven and reggae blaring on the speaker. The people are warm and welcoming and if you want a destination that will let you get under the skin of West Indian life – St Lucia is the one.

Will I get a chance to play?
Within the senior teams we coach, there are often opportunities for you to play. Our tours are catered around your individual desires hence matches between staff, you and friends of United Through Sport can be arranged easily.

What qualifications are required?
United Through Sport does not require any qualifications or previous coaching experience. Qualifications are appreciated and useful for your placement but all coaches are provided with our official coaching manual on arrival. Experienced coaches are always on-hand to aid your sessions. We are happy to tailor the tour to your needs and abilities.

I would like to spend over four weeks in St. Lucia, is this at all possible?
During summertime (June & July) it is possible to extend your stay up to 12 weeks, contact United Through Sport staff for more info and pricing.

How much spending money will I need?
It varies depending on the amount of excursions. For a 4 week stay volunteers usually bring from £400 - £700 depending on how many excursions and how outgoing they intend to be.

Are there ATM’s nearby?
A 24/7 international ATM is  10 minutes from our accommodation.

How should I manage my money?
It is recommended that you bring a small amount of cash, and carry the majority of spending money on a cash card/cash passport. The Post Office provides a card that avoids any charges for withdrawing cash. Although US dollars are commonly accepted we strongly recommend using Eastern Caribbean Dollars if you are exchanging currency in the UK.

Can I speak to the other volunteers that will be coming?
United Through Sport will provide means of communicating with other volunteers prior to arriving in St. Lucia. This may be via social media or via e-mails.

What can I do to support the charity in advance?
United Through Sport appreciates any extra help from volunteers. It is recommended that volunteers who wish to make donations either bring items with them to St Lucia, or bring enough money to purchase extra equipment in St. Lucia, rather than donating items to our UK office, as the costs of transporting items tends to be too expensive. Some volunteers bring other items (e.g. Small toys, sports shirts, etc.) to give to the children during their stay. Normal coaching equipment is provided for every sport as part of your placement fee.

Who will we coach?
The majority of your work will be coaching children in underprivileged communities in the Castries area, however you will also visit our project further across the island in many often neglected communities. There will also be the chance at the weekend to work with some of the most talented youth and senior players on the island.
Will there be any training provided?
Coaching does not begin straight away. United Through Sport provide an induction where you learn about the program, as well as some coaching techniques. In addition to this, the induction is a great place to meet with and learn from your fellow coaches.
