Rugby in Ghana
Immerse yourself in all things Rugby at a grass roots level with eager young players in local schools. Introduce the sport to complete beginners and encourage the skills and development of those who are already Rugby mad! Help spot the rising stars in local schools and give them the opportunity to develop their game and fuel their passion for the game. Through the introduction of structured coaching, Rugby will go from strength to strength in Ghana and as a volunteer on this project you will be making your own contribution to the growth of the sport in this incredible West African country.

Your Rugby Coaching Role
When compared to other sports in Ghana, Rugby is fairly new to many children in Accra and the surrounding areas. Although it is played and some clubs already exist in Ghana, it is very much an up and coming sport and currently lacks the structure and funding at the basic grass roots level to enable it to move forward as quickly as other sports have done. That said, Ghanaians are passionate about sport and this certainly doesn’t stop with Rugby; there are many keen youngsters who are desperate for the chance to develop their skills and have the aspirations of one day being as talented and successful as the likes of Paul Sackey and Raymond Rhule.

Many school children in Ghana are not familiar with Rugby but this certainly doesn’t deter their enthusiasm to have a go, particularly in a structured environment with coaches that are able to teach them the skills and basics of the game. As a Rugby coaching volunteer in Ghana, you will start your placement in schools in and around Accra, introducing the game to school children of a variety of ages. These coaching sessions will normally form part of PE lessons but you will also be encouraged to arrange after school clubs for the keener players who just can’t get enough of Rugby! You are sure to find your time spent in local schools incredibly rewarding as you introduce Rugby to children who may not have even seen the game played before, let alone had a go at playing the game for themselves, or have any solid grasp of the rules. But with your hard work, support, perseverance and dedication they are sure to pick up the basics in no time.

This volunteer project runs Monday to Friday in the afternoons. Please keep in mind that during public holidays, there may be some disruption to your project. Your weekends are your free time to spend as you wish – whether you fancy exploring different places across Ghana or staying closer to home and relaxing at the beach there are plenty of options for you.

CRB/DBS (Criminal Records Bureau) Check
To take part in this project we advise participants to complete a CRB/ DBS (Criminal Records Bureau). United Through Sport can provide this service for you at an additional cost of £30. For more information on the application process please take a look at the relevant Add On Tab.

Social Life
The volunteer house is ideally located for getting out and about around Accra, your evenings and weekends are you own free time to do as you please. Depending on the timings of your placement you may also have some free time during the day too. There is plenty to see, do and experience in the local vicinity and further into the city of Accra as well so you will never be short of things to do.

There is a taxi rank very close-by to the house which makes it very easy to get around. Just a couple of houses away from the volunteer house is a great bar and restaurant – a popular hang out with volunteers in the evenings and weekends. The volunteer house is also only 15-20 minutes away from the beach too! There are lots of other great bars etc in the local area so you will never be short of options. Osu is just 30 minutes away and is a very popular area at weekends, with great restaurants, casinos, clubs and bars, it’s a great place to experience Accra’s fantastic nightlife.

Other activities
Ghana has plenty of great places to visit and explore during your free time. Evenings and weekends are your free time to go out and explore as you please.  Some weekends you may choose to explore further afield and visit some other places around the country - popular weekend trip destinations include the beautiful Volta region, historic Cape Coast, Kakum National Park’s canopy walk and Mole National Park in Ghana’s northern region.

Closer to home in Accra there are some great places to visit for the day or afternoon as well. Our team in Ghana can help you arrange weekend trips and give plenty of suggestions on places to visit during your free time.

Transport
Transport during your stay in Ghana is not included in your placement fee; however during your orientation and induction over your first couple of days, our Ghana team will show and tell you everything you need to know about local transport and how to use it. The team will continue to accompany you to placement until you feel comfortable in using it yourself.

Orientation
At the beginning of your stay in Ghana you will be given a full induction and orientation of the main areas and points of interest of central Accra. During the orientation you’ll visit places such as Osu, the craft market and the National Museum of Ghana which will give you an understanding of Ghana’s history since independence. This is a great way to familiarise yourself with your new surroundings and get you settled in.

Fundraise for your trip
We encourage all of our volunteers to fundraise in order to make up the trip project price, making it much easier for you to manage financially and most importantly to help spread the word about the amazing work you are doing! We will be here every step of the way to give you tips and advice on fundraising ideas and provide you with any marketing material you need, and you'll be surprised how quickly you can raise the money with the help of your family and friends. By setting up a fundraising page through 'Total Giving' the charity can also claim an additional 25% on donations made if the Gift Aid box is ticked. This means 25% more funds to help support our worthwhile projects overseas!

Please note this additional 25% Gift Aid will be treated as a donation to United Through Sport and will not count towards your project price.

CRB/DBS (Criminal Records Bureau) Check
To take part in this project we advise that participants complete a CRB/ DBS check. United Through Sport has a partnership with a third party organisation that processes all CRB/DBS checks and disclosures on behalf of the United Through Sport team. This is a very straightforward process making the application as quick an easy for the volunteer as possible. United Through Sport can provide this service for you at an additional cost of £30. For more information on the application process please take a look at the relevant Add On tab.

Ghana

Ghana is on the coast of the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Guinea. Ghana gained its independence from the United Kingdom in 1957 and is known as being one of the most stable, democratic and friendly nations on the continent of Africa. Despite having such a great reputation for their fantastic attitude and laid-back way of life, it is estimated that 31% of the population are living below the poverty line. That is why United Through Sport is working hard to use sport as a tool for development, trying to tap into the Country's rich pool of talented youngsters.

Ghana is a truly stunning country, brimming with history and culture. Ghana's 350 mile coastline is dotted with many significant forts, castles and harbours from colonial times. Ghana was also the site of numerous kingdoms and empires much of which can still be seen today. Our project is based in the amazingly lively capital city of Accra on the coast. If it isn't just the golden beaches you are after, the fascinating history or the incredible nightlife you are after, there are beautiful rainforests and mountains to wow you throughout your stay.

There’s plenty of places to get out and explore all over Ghana, here are some of our favourites:

Highlights
Cape Coast and Kakum National Park: Located approximately 3 hours west of Accra, Cape Coast is home to the famous Cape Coast Castle which was a key landmark during the Ghana’s slave trade history; take a tour of the castle and learn more about Ghana’s past. For those feeling adventurous, head further inland to Kakum National Park and challenge yourself on the canopy walk high up in the jungle tree tops!

Volta Region: This is a firm favourite with our volunteers and it’s easy to see why. The Volta region is an extremely beautiful area of Ghana and is home to lush green forest. Climb Ghana’s highest mountain, take the most refreshing swim of your life at Wli waterfalls and feed monkeys at a nearby monkey sanctuary.

Mole National Park: Located in Ghana’s northern region near Tamale – Mole is Ghana’s largest wildlife sanctuary. You can enjoy both walking and jeep safaris in Mole National Park as well as experience local life on a village tour and see how the northern and predominantly Muslim region differs from the south of the country.

Big Millys: A well-known backpackers resort on the beach approximately an hour away from the volunteer house. This makes for a great weekend getaway with regular reggae nights and entertainment.

Ghana is famed for being one of Africa’s safest and friendliest countries. Located in West Africa, Ghana lies just north of the Equator on the Gulf of Guinea and borders Ivory Coast to the west, Burkina Faso to the north and Togo to the east. With beautiful palm lined beaches, lush jungle rainforest, idyllic lakes, fascinatingly rich cultures and traditions, wonderfully friendly people and a history of that spans centuries; Ghana is the perfect first step into Africa.

Ghana’s people are well known for their warmth and friendliness – you’ll notice this as soon as you arrive and it is certainly a memory of Ghana that you will carry with you. It is a fantastic destination for both first-time travellers and seasoned travellers alike.
